Born into poverty, Carl Larsson (Swedish, 1853–1919) earned a scholarship to study art. He lived in Paris before moving in 1882 to the Scandinavian artists’ colony of Grèz-sur-Loing. There he met artist Karin Bergöö, who encouraged Larsson’s transition from large-scale allegorical oil painting to light-infused watercolour.
In Sundborn, Larsson found his artistic voice, documenting his home, family, friends, and neighbors in charming detail, as these images attest.
