Charley Harper (American, 1922–2007) painted animals of all kinds in his unmistakable minimal realist style, portraying their essence with geometric shapes and vivid colours. With Mystery of the Missing Migrants, Harper commented on the disappearance of Neotropical birds from their migratory nesting sites in North American woodlands. He once wrote, "Each April, I listen anxiously to the dawn chorus for the return of my favourite, that world-class flutist, the Wood Thrush."
